For Year 7 starting September 2023

Orchards Academy admits 120 students in Year 7. All Year 7 admissions are processed by the Local Education Authority and we adhere to its Admissions policy as follows:

  • Looked after/ previously looked after children will be given first priority ahead of all other applications
  • Children with a sibling attending at the time of application and admission.
  • Health and Special Access Reasons- medical circumstances supported by medical evidence
  • Remaining applications

In the event of over-subscription with any of the above criteria, priority will be determined by the straight line distance from home to school, those living closest being given highest priority.

Making an appeal for Year 7 for academic year 2023-24 after National Offer Day on 1 March 2023

If your child is due to start Secondary School in September 2023 you can appeal if you were refused a place at one of your preferred schools on the National Offer day 1 March 2023. Please click on the link below for further information and guidance. Appeals should be made before 28 March 2023.

Timetable for Appeals through Kent County Council

Your appeal will be heard at what is called a Hearing, within a time scale of 40 school days.


All other appeals known as ‘in-year’ casual admissions and those for Year 7 submitted after the KCC cut off date will be heard within 30 school working days of submitting the request to Orchards Academy- please refer to the Orchards Academy Appeals Process below.

Application outcomes will be confirmed in writing no later than 15 school days from receipt of the application- please note that applications received during the school holidays will be processed as soon as the school re-opens.

If the number of applications for the school, for any year group, is more than the number of places available, the oversubscription criteria (as per our Admissions Policy) will be applied.  The same oversubscription criteria will apply if the school is in a position to offer a place from the Waiting List.

Any child not offered a place has the statutory right of appeal to an Independent Appeal Panel. The Independent Appeal Panel will be determined by the Governing Body on an annual basis and will, usually, consist of two lay members and one person from the community, independent of the School. The decision of the Independent Appeal Panel will be binding on the Governors and the parents. Full details of the Appeals process are available from the Clerk to the Independent Appeal Panel. Parents wishing to make an appeal should contact the school to request a Registration and Appeal Form or use this link for a copy of the form.

In-year casual admissions and those for Year 7 submitted after Monday 28 March 2022 will be heard within 30 school working days of submitting the request.

Please note this form should not be used for Year 6 students who have not been offered a place at this school on National Offer Day 1 March 2023- you should use the Kent link above in the first instance before 28 March 2023.
