Proposed New Resource Provision at Orchards Academy

Over the last couple of years, we as a mainstream secondary school within the Sevenoaks District and locally within Swanley, have noted an increasing need for specialist provision for students with ASD. Typically, this results in a child transferring to mainstream in Year 7 and then having to move on to a specialist provision very quickly as they struggle considerably following transition.

With the support of Kent County Council, it is our intention to offer a form of specialised provision at Orchards Academy that will meet these identified needs and offer for a small number of students a resource provision on site that will not only provide appropriate teaching but also inclusive support, that will enable a young person to have access to mainstream secondary education without having to almost immediately move on to another specialist provider.

By offering this provision it is hoped that the identified emerging need is met and that those children with ASD are given the opportunity available to their peers of a local education where from primary to secondary provision they remain within their local community.

We’d like to hear your views on this proposal.
