National Democracy Week

On 2nd July Sir Michael Fallon MP, Cllr Lesley Dyball (Mayor of Swanley), Cllr Anna Firth, Cllr Pat Bosley and lots of other visitors from Swanley and Sevenoaks Councils came to Orchards Academy to talk to Year 10 students about democracy.

Subjects discussed were the suffragettes, Government and local councils. Students were advised how to register to vote so they have a say in what the country does.

A Polling station was set up and students took part in a vote on whether social media laws should be governed by only young people- this came out as a majority vote for Yes.

All enjoyed the talks and were thankful to have the opportunity to participate in this.
